Republic of Korea - Profile
NOC Overview
Republic of Korea did not compete at the first Asian Games, but has appeared at every edition since making its debut in 1954. In that time the NOC has only finished outside the top three of the medal table twice, in 1962 and 1974.
As host to the 2014 Games, the Republic of Korea claimed 79 gold medals in Incheon, a figure bettered only by the NOC's performances as host to the 2002 Busan and 1986 Seoul Games. However, four years later at the 2018 Games in Indonesia, the Korean delegation dipped to its lowest number of gold medals [49] since the 1982 Games.
At the 2018 Games, tenpin bowler Ryu Seo-Yeon won her sixth Asian Games gold medal, equalling the Korean record shared by fencer Nam Hyunhee, archer Yang Chung-Hoon, dressage rider Suh Jung-Kyun and swimmer Park Tae-Hwan.
Also in Indonesia, shooter Son Hye Kyoung became the third Korean to compete at six editions of the Asian Games, equalling the record set by handballer Yoon Kyung-Shin and shooter Park Byung-Taek in 2010. Cyclist Na Ah-Reum was the Republic of Korea's most successful athlete at the 2018 Games, claiming four gold medals in road and track cycling, while diver Woo Haram also took home four medals [two silver, two bronze] from Indonesia.
Shooter Park Byung-Taek has the second largest medal collection in Asian Games history. His 19 medals, including five gold, were won between 1990 and 2010, and only Chinese male shooter Wang Yifu has claimed more medals.
