Team Overview

General
Thailand previously competed in water polo at the Asian Games in 1966, 1970, 1978, and 1998. They were hosts of the Games on each occasion.

The Thai team had to wait for their third appearance [in 1978] before securing their first victory at the Games. They ended up winning two of their six matches in the round-robin style tournament and finished fifth out of seven teams. In 1998 they lost both of their preliminary round matches but beat Kuwait and Hong Kong, China in the 7th-9th place classification stage to end the tournament on a high.

Thailand placed fourth at the 2023 Asian Water Polo Championships. After posting a victory over Uzbekistan, a defeat to the People's Republic of China, and a penalty shoot-out win against hosts Singapore during the group stage, they knocked out Hong Kong, China with a 21-9 victory in the quarterfinals. Their tournament ended with defeats to the Islamic Republic of Iran [20-9] in the semifinals and Kazakhstan [18-7] in the bronze medal match, but the team's final ranking of fourth was an improvement on the 2022 edition of the tournament, where they finished in seventh place as hosts.

The Thais have won a number of medals at the South East Asian Games, including silver in 2001 and 2003, and bronze in 2013, 2015, and 2023.
