Team Overview

General
The Republic of Korea are four-time gold medallists at the Asian Games. They secured their first triumph on home turf in Seoul in 1986 and then played in four straight gold medal matches from 1994 to 2006, losing only the 1998 final in a shoot-out against India. The team also claimed bronze in 1958 and 2014.

At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, the Korean team placed outside of the top four for the first time since 1982. They stormed through their first three pool matches against Hong Kong, China [11-0], Sri Lanka [8-0] and Indonesia [15-0], before a 5-3 defeat to India set up a decisive final meeting with Japan, which the Koreans lost 3-2. They were left to compete in the fifth place play-off and eased to a 7-0 victory over Bangladesh.

The Republic of Korea are reigning Asia Cup champions. They met Malaysia three times at the 2022 edition of the tournament, losing 5-4 in the pool stage then drawing 2-2 in the Super 4s round. The two sides faced off once again in the final in Jakarta, and this time the Koreans triumphed 2-1 to claim their fifth Asia Cup title. Several months later, the Republic of Korea lost to Malaysia in the final of the 2022 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

The team debuted at the Olympic Games in 1988 and came agonisingly close to winning gold at the 2000 Games in Sydney. They scored two late goals to snatch a 3-3 draw and force penalties in the final against the Netherlands, but were beaten 5-4 in the shoot-out. They have not competed at the Games since 2012. In seven appearances at the World Cup, the Republic of Korea's highest finish was fourth in both 2002 and 2006. They made it to the quarterfinals of the 2023 World Cup, where they lost 5-1 to the Netherlands.
