Team Islamic Republic of Iran - Profile
NOC Overview
Islamic Republic of Iran has only missed three editions of the Asian Games and enjoyed its biggest success on home soil in Tehran in 1974, winning 36 gold medals to quadruple its previous best of nine set in 1970.
Wrestling and weightlifting were the cornerstone of the NOC's success in Tehran, with wrestler Eskander Moslem Filabi winning a gold medal in both freestyle and Greco-Roman versions of the sport. Filabi's exploits in Tehran took his gold medal count to an Iranian best of four, which he won across three Asian Games appearances between 1966 and 1974.
In more recent years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has won at least 20 gold medals at each of the past three editions of the Games. In 2018 the NOC won a total of 62 medals, coming the closest it has ever been to the record total of 81 won in 1974. Just like in 1974, weightlifting and wrestling were a reliable source of medals for the NOC in Indonesia, but it was the martial arts that provided the most success in 2018, supplying 21 medals across karate, taekwondo, and wushu.
Discus thrower Ehsan Haddadi equalled Eskander Moslem Filabi's record number of Asian Games titles in 2018 after winning his fourth consecutive discus crown. Haddadi's victory in Indonesia made him the second athletics competitor from any nation to win gold in the same event at four consecutive editions of the Asian Games.
In team sports, prior to 2018 India had won all nine men's and women's kabaddi gold medals at the Games, but Islamic Republic of Iran broke India's stranglehold in Indonesia as it claimed gold in both events. The Iranian women's team defeated India in their final, while the men's team knocked India out in the semifinals before beating Republic of Korea in their gold medal match. The Iranian men's volleyball team also claimed gold in 2018 after defeating Republic of Korea in the final, four years after beating Japan for gold at the 2014 Games in Incheon.
