NOC Overview
India is one of seven NOCs to have competed at every edition of the Asian Games. The NOC enjoyed its most successful Asian Games campaign in 2018 in Indonesia where its tally of 70 medals surpassed its previous best of 65 in 2010. The 16 gold medals India claimed in Indonesia finally exceeded the NOC's previous best of 15 set at the inaugural Asian Games in 1951.
Prior to the 2018 Games, India had secured every kabaddi gold medal in Asian Games history. However, the NOC relinquished its monopoly on both the men's and women's kabaddi titles in 2018, departing Indonesia with bronze and silver, respectively. The men's team lost its semifinal to Islamic Republic of Iran, while the women's team lost the gold medal match to the same nation.
Athletics competitors Hima Das and Poovamma Raju Machettira were the NOC's most successful athletes in 2018 with two gold medals each in the women's 4x400m relay and mixed 4x400m relay events. They originally crossed the line in second position in the mixed event, but were upgraded to gold in 2020 after Bahraini athlete Kemi Adekoya's results from the Games were disqualified due to doping offences.
Also in Indonesia, shooter Chaudhary Saurabh was India's youngest gold medallist at the Games, having triumphed in the men's 10m air pistol at age 16 years and 101 days, while the NOC also claimed its first ever Asian Games medals in table tennis [bronze in both men's team and mixed doubles] and sepaktakraw [bronze in men's team].
Athletics has been the strongest source of medals for India. The NOC's most successful female athlete, PT Usha, won four gold and seven silver medals on the track between 1982 and 1994. Her haul includes an incredible 1986 Games where she won gold in the 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay, and claimed silver in the 100m. The only Indian with a larger gold medal collection than Usha is male tennis player Leander Paes, who won five gold medals between 1990 and 2006.
