Team Overview

General
The Republic of Korea have won the most medals at the Asian Games of any team, with 14. In 15 appearances they have only missed out on the podium once, losing to Thailand in the quarterfinals at the 2006 Games in Doha. However, they have claimed gold just twice - winning the round-robin tournament in 1994 in Hiroshima, and defeating the People's Republic of China 3-0 in the gold medal match at Incheon 2014. They were runners-up five times between 1962 and 1990, when the tournament was in a round-robin format, and also won silver in 1998, 2002, and 2010, losing the final to the People's Republic of China on each occasion.

At the 2018 Games they claimed their fourth bronze medal. Their only defeat from five pool matches was against the People's Republic of China, and they knocked out hosts Indonesia 3-0 in the quarterfinals. Their progress was halted by Thailand in the semifinals, which set up a bronze medal match against Japan that the Korean team won 3-1.

The Republic of Korea amassed 17 Asian championship medals from 20 appearances between 1975 and 2019 but the team did not win the title in that period. At the 2019 edition in Seoul, they lost to Japan 3-1 in the semifinals before beating the People's Republic of China in the third place play-off. They had lost the 2015 final to the Chinese team.

The Korean team have one Olympic medal, a bronze from 1976. At the 2020 Games in Tokyo, they came close to a second podium finish but lost the bronze medal match to Serbia having been beaten in the semifinals by Brazil. The Republic of Korea competed in all four editions of the Nations League between 2018 and 2022 without progressing to the final round. Their other recent results include an overall ranking of 20th at the 2022 World Championship and a sixth-place finish at the 2019 World Cup.
