Team Overview

General
The People's Republic of China are the reigning Asian Games champions, and have won eight of the 10 gold medals on offer since 1982. On the two occasions during this period when they did not secure the title - 1994 and 2014 - they still made it all the way to the final and finished with silver.

In Incheon in 2014, the Chinese team were beaten 3-0 by hosts the Republic of Korea in the gold medal match. Four years later in Indonesia they finished top of their group, defeating the Republic of Korea in the process, before recording wins over the Philippines and Japan in the knockout rounds and then beating Thailand in the final. The cherry on the cake for them was going through the whole of the tournament without losing a set.

The People's Republic of China have won more titles than any other team at both the Asian championship and the Asian Cup. However, after winning the 2015 Asian Championship title on home soil, they were defeated in the semifinals of the tournament and finished fourth in both 2017 and 2019. At the 2022 Asian Cup, they reached the final but lost 3-1 to Japan.

The Chinese team are three-time champions at the Olympic Games, most recently winning gold at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Their run to the final in Rio included victories over Brazil and the Netherlands, before they dispatched Serbia 3-1 in the final. At the 2020 Games, however, they failed to progress from their group after only winning two of five pool matches and finished ranked ninth overall.

In 2022 the People's Republic of China were beaten by Italy in the quarterfinals of the world championship. They had ranked third at the previous edition of the tournament in 2018, defeating the Netherlands in the third place play-off, and also secured back-to-back third-place finishes in the Nations League in 2018 and 2019. They won the 2019 World Cup in Japan to secure their second consecutive World Cup title.
