She was struggling with a shoulder injury during the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia. The injury started to bother her in 2017. (straitstimes, 08 Apr 2018)

In November 2011 she broke two bones in her arm in a surfing accident when a surfboard hit her after a big wave. The injury required surgery, with two metal plates and 15 screws inserted in her arm. The injury stopped her from swimming for six weeks and she did not regain full use of her arm for three months. The time out meant she was unable to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. (Athlete, 03 Aug 2016; digital, 22 Mar 2015; news, 03 Sep 2014)

She began swimming classes at age five, and started training for competitive swimming at age 11. "I trained twice a day, 10 sessions a week, 05:30 mornings, 16:30 afternoons, with school in between. That was my life until I finished university." (vogue, 25 Jan 2022; Athlete, 03 Aug 2016)

Additional Information

General
FAMILY SPORT
She is the oldest of three siblings, along with brother Zheng Wen and sister Jing Wen, who have all represented Singapore in swimming. "I come from a very tight-knit family. I'm the oldest of three. We all grew up swimming together. Because my mum was spending so much time ferrying me to the pool, my siblings just naturally got into the sport. It was difficult for me when my brother left for school [in the United States of America] in 2017. And then my sister left for school the same year later on. I didn't realise it at that time, but I think I was struggling with not having them here with me. I feel kind of bad that they never really got to explore other sports, but at the same time, I'm very grateful that they're here with me. They are one of the reasons why I still love what I do." (vogue, 25 Jan 2022; You Got Watch YouTube channel, 21 Jan 2022; channelnewsasia, 04 Aug 2021; CNA YouTube channel, 02 Jul 2021; 1 Play Sports YouTube channel, 15 Aug 2019)

BODY IMAGE
She says it took her a long time to embrace her physique as a swimmer. "I remember the very first time I actually thought about my body and how it was different from many of my peers was when I was 17, and my classmate made a comment, something along the lines of how swimmers' bodies are like upside-down triangles. I feel the most normal, and the most 'me' at the pool. I do not know yet if my shoulders will get smaller when I'm done swimming, but I think since 2016, I've come to not just accept but embrace myself, my physique, my build. I've learnt to actually be proud that I am an athlete, I am a swimmer." (The Straits Times YouTube channel, 21 Dec 2021)
