His older sister Ting Wen competed in swimming at the 2008, 2016, and 2020 Olympic Games. His younger sister Jing Wen has also represented Singapore in the sport and won six gold medals at the 2022 South East Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam. General
NATIONAL SERVICE
In July 2015 the Ministry of Defence in Singapore announced his national service would be deferred until August 2016, allowing him to train for, and compete at, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. An extension to his deferment, which allowed him to enrol at the University of California in the United States of America, was confirmed in September 2016. In 2020 the deferment was extended again due to the postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He enlisted in September 2021 and completed his basic military training [BMT] in December the same year. "My sergeant was telling me that I can say goodbye to the body that I currently have because in the army, you just don't get as much rest as you do outside. Through my experiences in BMT, I know now with more certainty what I am capable of and it makes me more confident. I plan to continue racing for the country, so that we can fly our flag high on the international stage." FAMILY SPORT
He says his sisters Ting Wen and Jing Wen, who have also represented Singapore in swimming, have been influential figures in his life.
