Team Overview

General
Pakistan's eight gold medals at the Asian Games are more than any other nation. Pakistan won the sport's inaugural gold medal in 1958 in a round-robin tournament. Following a change of format, they faced India in gold medal matches at the next six editions of the Games from 1962 to 1982, losing only once, 1-0 after extra time in 1966. They were also gold medallists in 1990 and 2010, and won further silver medals in 1986 and 2014.

At Indonesia 2018, the Pakistan team missed out on the podium for only the second time in 16 appearances at the Games. They maintained a perfect record in the pool stage with wins over Thailand, Oman, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Bangladesh. However, they lost 1-0 to eventual champions Japan in the semifinals, and were denied a fourth bronze medal at the Asian Games by a 2-1 defeat to India in the third place play-off.

Pakistan's rich history extends to the global stage, though success has been harder to come by this century. The team won eight Olympic medals between 1956 and 1992, including three golds [1960, 1968, 1984], but they have not returned to the podium since and last competed at the Games in 2012. Pakistan won the first of four World Cup titles at the maiden event in 1971 and have also finished as runners-up twice. They have placed no higher than fifth since triumphing at the 1994 edition of the tournament.

The team were also champions at the first three editions of the Asia Cup [1982, 1985, 1989]. In 2022 they placed fifth at the Asia Cup and third at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.
