Team Overview

General
Indonesia are making their 11th appearance in the Asian Games men's football tournament. The team's best result came in 1958 in Tokyo, where they won bronze after defeating India 4-1 in the third place play-off. After finishing fourth in 1986, they only appeared at one of the next six editions of the Asian Games [competing in 2006], but they took part in both 2014 and 2018.

As hosts of the 2018 Games, the Indonesian team began the tournament strongly by topping Group A with three wins and one defeat. However, they were eliminated in the round of 16 in dramatic fashion. Facing the United Arab Emirates, the Indonesians were on course for defeat in regulation time until they snatched an equaliser in the 95th minute to make it 2-2. Their efforts proved to be in vain though, as the Emiratis ultimately prevailed in a penalty shoot-out.

Indonesia won gold at the 2023 South East Asian Games in Cambodia, claiming their first title at the Games in 32 years following a 5-2 victory against Thailand after extra time. It was their fourth consecutive medal at the competition. They defeated Myanmar in the 2017 bronze medal match, lost to Vietnam in the final in 2019, and overcame Malaysia on penalties in the bronze medal match at the 2021 Games.

The team's sole appearance at the Olympic Games came in 1956 in Melbourne, where they held eventual gold medallists the Soviet Union 0-0 in the quarterfinals before losing 4-0 in a replay two days later.
