Japan have competed at each of the 12 editions of the Asian Games to feature artistic gymnastics, finishing on the podium at all 12 tournaments. They won their only gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, and have also claimed seven silver medals and four bronze medals.
The Japanese team have enjoyed consistent success at the Olympic Games. They won their first medal, a silver, in 1956 and then claimed five consecutive gold medals from 1960 to 1976, which included victory on home soil at Tokyo 1964. They secured their sixth and seventh Olympic golds in 2004 and 2016, respectively, but they had to settle for silver as hosts of the 2020 Games after finishing just 0.103 points behind ROC.
Japan have 21 medals from 24 appearances at the world championships. They won five gold medals between 1962 and 1978, and claimed their sixth title at the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. At the 2022 edition of the tournament in Liverpool, England, the Japanese team were runners-up behind the People's Republic of China.
