Team Turkmenistan - Profile
NOC Overview
Turkmenistan has appeared at every Asian Games since its debut in 1994. Weightlifter Altimurat Orazdurdyev claimed the NOC's first gold medal by triumphing in the men's 76kg category at the 1994 Games in Hiroshima.
Male shooter Igor Pirekeyev is Turkmenistan's most successful athlete at the Asian Games with four career medals. He has won two of the NOC's three gold medals, following his victories in 50m rifle prone in 1998 and 50m rifle 3 positions in 2002. Pirekeyev also won silver in 50m rifle prone at the 2002 and 2006 Games, and remains the only athlete representing Turkmenistan to have won more than two medals of any colour at the Games.
Only three other Turkmen athletes, all rowers, have won more than one medal at the Games - Sergey Bormotin, Dmitry Krupin and Valery Gussar each won two medals apiece at the 1994 Games. At the 2014 Games in Incheon, weightlifter Umurbek Bazarbayev became the first athlete to represent Turkmenistan at five editions of the Asian Games.
At the 2018 Games in Indonesia athletes from Turkmenistan won three medals. Weightlifter Kristina Shermetova became the second female athlete to claim an Asian Games silver medal for Turkmenistan, as she placed second in the 53kg category. Kemal Meredov won Turkmenistan's first ju-jitsu medal with bronze in the men's ne-waza 56kg event, while Greco-Roman wrestler Syhazberdi Owelekow also secured bronze in the men's 87kg division.
