NOC Overview
The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste has competed at each edition of the Asian Games since making its debut in 2002. The NOC is yet to win a medal, with four athletes finishing with an equal ranking of fifth in three martial arts sports [taekwondo, pencak silat and karate] at the Games. Among them, karateka Manuel De Carval Marques came the closest to a medal after progressing to the men's 55kg kumite bronze medal bout via repechage in 2010, which he ultimately lost.
At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, the NOC had its highest number of representatives at a single edition of the Games. Pencak silat competitors Silestre Dos Santos Barbosa [men's 60kg] and Joaquim Afonso Gomes [men's 55kg] posted the NOC's highest finishes in Indonesia, as each finished ranked equal fifth after both were knocked out of the quarterfinals of their divisions.
Also in Indonesia, Valeria Bhakita Franca Sarmento became the first BMX rider and Imelda Belo the first swimmer to represent the NOC at the Asian Games, while Timor-Leste athletes also competed in shooting for the first time. The NOC's youngest athletes in Indonesia were 16-year-old athletics competitors Angela Freitas De Fatima Araujo, who took part in three women's events with a best ranking of 10th in the 800m, and Roberto Belo Amaral Soares whose time saw him ranked 20th in the men's 1500m.
