Team Qatar - Profile
NOC Overview
Qatar has sent athletes to every Asian Games since making its debut in 1978 in Bangkok, and hosted the 2006 Games in Doha. The NOC secured its first medal at the 1982 Games in Delhi, where Monassar Mohammed Saleh claimed bronze in the men's decathlon. Qatar won its first gold four years later in Seoul with sprinter Talal Mansoor winning the men's 100m.
Three Qatari athletes have won four or more gold medals at the Games, and all competed in athletics. Mansoor successfully defended his 1986 title in 100m at the Beijing 1990 Games, and then claimed the 100m-200m sprint double at the 1994 Games in Hiroshima. Femi Ogunode also won four gold medals in sprint events in 2010 and 2014, including the 100m-200m double in 2014. Middle distance runner Mohamed Suleiman is the only Qatari to boast five Asian Games gold medals, including three consecutive 1500m titles from 1990 to 1998. Suleiman and Mansoor are the only Qatari athletes to date to have won gold in the same event at three editions of the Games.
Female Qatari athletes have won medals in three events at the Games. In shooting, the 10m running target team won bronze in both 2006 and 2014, while Zhu Chen's bronze in chess from the 2006 Games is the only women's medal in an individual event for the NOC.
Notable results for Qatar from the 2018 Games in Indonesia include the men's handball team retaining their title from four years earlier in Incheon, while there were also gold medals for the men's 4x400m relay team and men's beach volleyball pair Ahmed Tijan and Cherif Younousse. Three athletes picked up gold in individual events in Indonesia - Abdalelah Haroun [men's 400m], Ashraf Amgad El Seify [men's hammer throw], and Abderrahman Samba [men's 400m hurdles].
