Team Philippines - Profile
NOC Overview
Philippines is one of seven NOCs to appear at every edition of the Asian Games. The NOC hosted the second edition in 1954 in Manila, where it won 14 gold medals, its highest total at a single edition of the Games.
In the early years of the Asian Games, the Philippines men's basketball team were dominant. The team won four consecutive gold medals between 1951 and 1962, with Carlos Loyzaga, nicknamed 'The Big Difference', a member of all four teams.
Also dating back to the early years of the Games are female swimmer Haydee Espino and male shooter Adolfo Feliciano, who share the NOC's record for most total medals [10] won at the Games. Tenpin bowler Olivia Bong Coo is the athlete with the most gold medals for Philippines at the Asian Games, winning five golds between the 1978 and 1986 Games.
In 2018 in Indonesia, golf provided two of the NOC's four gold medals. Yuka Saso claimed victory in the women's individual event and helped Philippines secure the women's team title, while teammate Bianca Pagdanganan also won an individual bronze medal, making her and Saso the only multi-medallists for Philippines in 2018. In 2022, Saso switched to represent Japan.
Also in Indonesia, skateboarding made its Asian Games debut and Margielyn Arda Didal won gold for Philippines in the women's street event. Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz also made history as she won gold in the women's 53kg category to secure Philippines' first Asian Games weightlifting medal, and judoka Kiyomi Watanabe claimed the NOC's first Asian Games judo medal with silver in the women's 63kg division.
