Team Iraq - Profile
NOC Overview
Iraq has claimed most of its Asian Games gold medals in athletics, while weightlifting has been its most profitable sport in terms of total medals.
The NOC's first gold medals were both won in the men's 400m hurdles event. Talib Faisal Al Saffar claimed Iraq's first when the NOC debuted at the 1974 Games, and then Hussein Kadhum won the same event at the 1978 Games. Iraq also triumphed in men's football at the 1982 Games in New Delhi, defeating neighbours Kuwait in the final.
After the 1986 Games, Iraq did not send any athletes to the Games between 1990 and 2002, but returned in 2006 where its men's football team made the final once again. This time, however, the team lost the gold medal match to Qatar. Only two Iraqi athletes have claimed gold since the men's football team's triumph in 1982. Middle-distance runner Adnan Taees Akkar won the men's 800m event at the 2014 Games, while weightlifter Safaa Al-Jumaili triumphed in the men's 85kg category at the 2018 Games.
No Iraqi athlete has won more than one Asian Games gold medal, but several athletics competitors have achieved multiple podium finishes, including Al Saffar and Akkar, as well as Faleh Naji Jarallah, who all have three medals each. Iraq is yet to have a female medallist at the Games, with a fifth-place finish in the 4x400m relay in 2010 the NOC's best result in a women's event.
At the 2018 Games, in addition to weightlifter Al-Jumaili's gold, Iraq won two silver medals courtesy of another weightlifter, Salwan Alaifuri in the men's 105kg, and men's discus thrower Mustafa Kadhim Dagher Al Saamah.
