Team Overview

General
Japan made their Asian Games debut in women's water polo at the 2014 Games in Incheon, placing second in the round-robin tournament to claim the silver medal. The Japanese team had an identical record to Kazakhstan in 2014, but finished higher than the Kazakhstani team because they had scored more goals against the gold medallists, the People's Republic of China. The team won another medal at the 2018 Games when victories against hosts Indonesia, as well as Thailand and Hong Kong, China were enough to secure bronze. They finished in third place behind the People's Republic of China and Kazakhstan, and missed out on the runners-up spot after losing 12-11 to the Kazakhstani team in the final round-robin match of the tournament.

The Japanese team reached the gold medal match at the Asian water polo championships in 2022, but had to settle for silver after losing the final to the People's Republic of China 17-5.

Japan made their Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020. Drawn in a group alongside Hungary, the ROC, the People's Republic of China, and eventual gold medallists the United States of America, they lost all four of their matches and did not progress to the knockout stage.

The team competed at six editions of the world championships between 2001 and 2023, but did not achieve a top-10 finish at the tournament in that period. As hosts of the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, their only victory came in the classification round over Argentina. They then lost the 13th place play-off to the People's Republic of China 18-10.
