Additional Information

General
TRAINING IN THE UNITED STATES
He considered retirement after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro but decided instead to relocate to San Diego, CA, United States of America, to join the Team Elite training group and prepare for the 2020 Olympic Games. He returned to Japan in 2020. "When I couldn't claim a medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, I felt a strong urge to quit immediately. I thought I might be outdated as an athlete. However, I wanted to demonstrate my abilities at the 2020 Olympic Games and made a big decision to train in a new environment by going to America. I thought I'd been swimming all the time in Japan and that I was running into a brick wall. I needed a change in environment to make me feel I could still compete and I was then able to see swimming from a new perspective." BOOKS
In 2013 he released his autobiography 'Swim Towards a Dream: What I Learned From the Sport'. He then released a second autobiography entitled 'Still, I Keep Swimming' in 2020. (amazon, 01 Sep 2020; hmv, 01 Mar 2013)
