Her mum saw she enjoyed being in the water and signed her up for swimming. "When my sister was training, my dad would bring me as a baby to the back pool. One day he just threw me into the shallow part, but I was a baby so it was deep for me. He said I just loved the water and floated naturally. So mum said I should just join swimming." General
FAMILY SPORT
She is the youngest of three siblings. Her brother Zheng Wen and her sister Ting Wen have also represented Singapore in swimming. "Growing up with two successful siblings has made me competitive. I've always felt the fight to make a name for myself or for people to take me seriously. It's not easy growing up in a household with three athletes and it doesn't help that we're all in the same sport, but that's what makes it fun for us - it's healthy competition. Being able to do this sport with my family, my siblings like my brother and sister, it's just really special and not something that a lot of people can experience. I'm just so appreciative of that." COLLEGE CAREER IN THE UNITED STATES
At age 16 she left her high school studies early to move to the United States of America with the aim of competing at collegiate level. In 2017 she began studying at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX, United States of America. "When I was talking to my coach back at home about branching out, she was like, 'Why don't you email [Texas A&M coach] Steve [Bultman]'. What really drew me to Steve was that he actually asked to see a video of my swim. No other college coach asked me that before, that showed me he was actually interested in seeing how I swam and not just looking at the times. It was a gut feeling that I should come [to Texas A&M] and I did. That's the best decision I have ever made." (Texas A&M Athletics YouTube channel, 06 Jan 2021)
