She was spotted by a government talent scout in Madhya Pradesh, India. "Our state government has a policy of scouting for young talent in every discipline, depending on their skills, fitness, and potential. I started swimming from the age of two with my father Devendra Singh Tomar. While participating in a swimming competition in Hoshangabad, I got selected by the coaches. The people of the water sports department for sailing present at the event thought my body weight and height was perfect for the Laser class. And, then the journey to this competition started. I did not want to be a swimmer, I did not want to be a sailor. It just happened." (sail-antigua, 24 Sep 2018; timesofindia, 06 Sep 2018; Athlete, 14 Aug 2018; business-standard, 04 Feb 2018)
