She began sailing at age 10 at primary school in Singapore. (asiangames, 01 Oct 2017)

"It was my sister Samantha who influenced me to give it a shot. This may surprise you but I was initially afraid of sailing and preferred to stay on the beach while others took to the boats. I was in both sailing and ballet at that time and was about to choose the latter. It was Samantha bringing me out on the Optimist together and the push from my parents that drew me to sailing. From there, the passion grew and the rest is history." (asiangames, 01 Oct 2017; lifestyle, 09 Jun 2012)

"You have to believe and trust in yourself that you've done the best you can, and not let the what-ifs and should-haves hinder you. It's important to learn more about yourself so you know when to pull back and when to push forward." (blog, 15 Sep 2021)

Additional Information

General
CREWMATE
She and Cecilia Low began sailing together in the 49erFX class in December 2014, with the intention of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. They have since won gold at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, and placed 10th at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "That was our goal - to get into the medal race [at the 2020 Games]. We knew we had the potential to do it, we knew we prepared well enough. It was just whether we could execute it. We're super happy and super proud of our five-year campaign." (straitstimes, 25 Mar 2022, 03 Aug 2021, 08 Dec 2019; channelnewsasia, 03 Aug 2021; Facebook team page, 13 Jul 2020)

BALANCING SPORT AND STUDY
She studied for a bachelor's degree in accounting at Singapore Management University between 2015 and 2022. She had previously taken several breaks from her studies ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games. "I remember being at one of my competitions and thinking about my exams, which ended up affecting my sailing. I told myself that if I wanted to do a campaign, I wanted to do it well, with no regrets. And that's when I decided to switch my focus to sailing. The university has been absolutely supportive of my sailing pursuits over these last seven years. In fact, it's the first time I've ever heard an educational institute telling their student that their sport should come first." (LinkedIn profile, 15 Mar 2023; blog, 15 Sep 2021)

HYPERMOBILITY
She has struggled with impingement injuries due to hypermobility. "My joints are more flexible than most people, so I also tend to get impingement injuries. Emotionally, it made me a little fatigued because it felt like I was always taking two steps forward, and one step back. Over the years, I've learnt from these lessons and have a better grasp of what I need to do to keep myself in top form. Now, I make sure that I do a lot of strengthening exercises especially for the small muscles, as well as practising self-regulation, which means that I don't overdo my training - a common problem amongst athletes."
