Team Overview

General
Malaysia are making their fifth appearance in the Asian Games rugby sevens competition in Hangzhou.

In 2018 in Indonesia, they progressed to the quarterfinals from a group containing Japan, Chinese Taipei, and hosts Indonesia with a record of two wins and one loss [to Japan]. After a 40-5 defeat to eventual bronze medallists the Republic of Korea in the last eight, they posted classification round victories against Thailand and the People's Republic of China to equal their best Asian Games result of fifth, which they had also achieved in 2010.

In nine Asian Series appearances between 2012 and 2022, Malaysia's best result was three sixth-place overall finishes. In the 2022 Asian Series, they finished last of eight teams.

The Malaysian team claimed gold as hosts of the 2017 South East Asian Games after defeating Singapore in the gold medal match. The triumph came between silver medals at the South East Asian Games in 2015 and 2019, with the team beaten by the Philippines in both finals. They have competed at six of the seven Commonwealth Games since 1998, when Malaysia hosted the inaugural Commonwealth sevens tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
