CHALLENGES
He has spoken about the challenges of coaching the Japanese men's national team when many of the players in the team have limited experience in sevens. "My two boys, who are 15 and 14 [speaking in 2023], have played more sevens tournaments in their lives at those ages than every single one of the Japan team members apart from [Kameli] Soejima, the Fijian. So for every one of them, it is a learning journey. Their footwork and agility is sensational. But because of the lack of sevens experience, their ability to recognise space and when to use space and when to close space is very, very low. So it is about constantly building pictures for them. I went into this with my eyes wide open about the challenge, it was never about the short term, it is a long-term project." (asiarugby, 24 Mar 2023)

EDUCATION
After completing a bachelor's degree in sports rehabilitation and sports science at St Mary's University, Twickenham in 2000, he studied for a master's degree in social and political science and management at the University of Cambridge from 2000 to 2002. He also studied for a master's degree in business administration at Southern Cross University between 2003 and 2007. (LinkedIn profile, 20 Mar 2023)
