She took up rowing when she was in high school in Tuyen Quang province, Vietnam. She then went to Hanoi and was first assigned to train and compete in traditional boat racing before resuming training in rowing. "At first, it was a bit psychological, I didn't understand why I was sent to practise another discipline. But every time I thought about my family, I was determined to practise.
