His father represented India in rowing at the Olympic Games, but it was only after meeting the Indian quadruple sculls team that won gold at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia that Parminder began rowing seriously. "When I met them, I was awestruck by how far sport can take you, the kind of life sport can give you, how your behaviour and personality transform when you reach that level. I got fascinated and wished that one day I should also reach their level and be able to compete in rowing at the top level." (timesofindia, 06 Jan 2022)

Additional Information

General
FATHER AND COACH
His father Inderpal Singh is a former international rower and has served as his coach. "It is a huge plus point for me. Firstly, it becomes a genetic thing. Secondly, we cannot discuss so much with a coach like when you have a one-on-one conversation with your dad. You get good clarity on the sport. Earlier I saw him only as a dad, not as a coach. At home, earlier our conversation was typically like between a son and a father. It was a lot of fun. But when I started professionally, the conversation was between a coach and a student. My sister [Avinash Kaur] also does rowing. Mum would get angry [and say], 'Outside also you talk about rowing and at home also you are discussing rowing'." (timesofindia, 06 Jan 2022)

OCCUPATION
In 2022 he became a petty officer in the Indian Navy. (newindianexpress, 05 Oct 2022)
