He was introduced to ju-jitsu during his pursuit to become a mixed martial arts [MMA] fighter. "I also did a year of wrestling when I was 16. When I graduated high school I wanted to pursue some sort of grappling. The reason that I got into grappling overall was because I wanted to become an MMA fighter. My first taste of martial arts was striking, I did that for three or four years when I was younger before any sort of grappling, I wanted to do MMA, so I picked up the wrestling.
