Team Overview

General
India's only gold medal at the Asian Games came in New Delhi in 1982, when women's hockey made its first appearance at the Games. The team claimed bronze four years later in 1986, but then had to wait 12 years for another medal - silver in 1998. India also picked up bronze in both 2006 and 2014, and at the 2018 Games in Indonesia they produced their best Asian Games result for 20 years. They conceded only one goal on their way to a gold medal match against Japan, which they lost 2-1, and had to settle for silver.

The team won the Asia Cup in 2004 and 2017. At the 2022 edition they overcame the People's Republic of China 2-0 in the third place play-off after losing to the Republic of Korea in the semifinals.

The Indian team competed at the inaugural World Cup in 1974 and made seven further appearances between 1978 and 2022. They ranked ninth at the 2022 World Cup. In 2022 the team also claimed bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham [their first Commonwealth Games medal since 2006], finished third on their debut Pro League appearance, and won the inaugural Nations Cup after defeating Spain 1-0 in the final.

India made their third Olympic appearance at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. They narrowly missed out on a first Olympic podium, finishing fourth after a 4-3 defeat to Great Britain in the bronze medal match. They also placed fourth on their Olympic debut at the boycott-affected 1980 Games in Moscow, which featured a six-team invitational tournament. On their other Olympic appearance in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, four losses and a draw in the group stage left them ranked last overall.
