India are making their fifth consecutive Asian Games appearance at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou. Having debuted in 2006 in Doha, the Indian team are yet to win a group match at the Asian Games, although they did draw 26-26 with Thailand in Group A at the 2014 Games. The two sides also faced each other in the seventh-place classification match in Incheon, where Thailand won on penalties after the match incredibly finished 26-26 once again after regulation time. India were beaten in all four of their group matches at Indonesia 2018, but finally secured a win at the Asian Games by defeating Malaysia 54-19 in the ninth-place classification match.

The Indian team competed at the Asian championship on seven occasions between 1993 and 2022 but they are yet to come close to a podium finish. They did secure the title at both editions of the South Asian Games to feature women's handball, however. India's women beat Bangladesh in the final at the 2016 Games and then defeated Nepal for gold three years later. They were also victors at the 2023 AHF Women's President Cup [previously the West Asian Women's Championship] in a tournament that also featured Jordan, Iraq, and Kuwait.
