Additional Information

General
RETURN TO BAHRAIN
He first coached the Bahrain men's national team from 2018 to 2020. He initially agreed to join Icelandic men's side Haukar following the conclusion of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo but after the Games were postponed for one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to leave his role as Bahrain coach in 2020. He returned as head coach of the Bahrain men's national team in March 2021. "I signed with Haukar as my family lives in Iceland and I was originally going to return there following Tokyo 2020. But COVID-19 changed everything, the Olympics were moved, and it all meant I could not be in Bahrain and honour my contract in Iceland at the same time as I had been travelling backwards and forwards between the two countries for the previous two years. I helped them [Bahrain] qualify for the Olympics and of course it's something you want to finish with the team. Now, the federation think the best solution is that I come and go. It had to be a solution that fitted everybody involved, both Bahrain and Haukar." (powerupsports, 26 Mar 2021; ihf, 26 Aug 2020, 05 May 2021; visir, 16 Jul 2020)

COACHING BEGINNINGS
As a player, he was a member of the Iceland squad that secured qualification for the 2004 Olympic Games. However, he missed the Games due to a knee injury and the problem later meant he had to retire from playing. He began his coaching career with Danish club Skjern. "I played my first national game in 1994, under [coach] Thorbergur Adalsteinsson, after having had a good tournament with the under 20 national team. I joined the senior team properly in 1999 and was in a very good position in 2003 when I was injured at the end of the year. I had surgery and was told how serious the injury was. Then the chairman of Skjern called me and offered me the coaching position. I had to decide whether I was going to start a new career there, as a coach for a good club in Denmark, or to try to fight as a player who could hardly play. So in the end, I decided to accept the offer." (dv, 08 Jan 2016)

His son Darri Aronsson has represented Iceland in handball, and was part of the squad at the 2022 European Championship in Hungary and Slovakia. (SportsDeskOnline, 24 May 2022; ruv, 23 Jan 2022)
