Team Overview

General
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea are one of only two teams to have won three gold medals at the Asian Games, alongside the People's Republic of China. They contested all five finals between 1998 and 2014, claiming gold in 2002, 2006, and 2014, and met Japan in three consecutive gold medal matches from 2006 to 2014. Also among their six total medals is a bronze from 1990.

The 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia was the first Games in which the DPR Korean team participated and failed to win a medal. During the group stage they posted comfortable wins over Tajikistan [16-0] and Hong Kong, China [8-0] along with a 2-0 loss to the People's Republic of China, before being eliminated 2-1 by their Asian Games rivals Japan in the quarterfinals.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea have won the Asian Cup on three occasions, in 2001, 2003, and 2008. They are one of only three teams with at least three Asian Cup titles, but have not featured at the tournament since finishing as runners-up in 2010.

The DPR Korean team have been unable to replicate their continental success on the global stage. In four World Cup appearances they have only progressed from the group stage once [2007], and have not competed at the tournament since the 2011 edition in Germany. The team participated at the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012, but did not make it to the knockout rounds on either occasion.
