Team Overview

General
The People's Republic of China were champions at the inaugural Asian Games women's football tournament in 1990, and went on to successfully defend their title in 1994 and 1998. The team had to settle for silver in 2002, and then won bronze in 2006. They missed out on a place on the podium for the first time four years later in Guangzhou, and in 2014 the team exited the tournament at the quarterfinal stage. At the 2018 Games in Indonesia they returned to the medal places, claiming silver after Japan scored a last-minute winner to beat them 1-0 in the gold medal match.

The Chinese team won the 2022 Asian Cup in India, which was their first Asian Cup title since 2006. They defeated Japan in the semifinals on a penalty shoot-out before a thrilling final against the Republic of Korea. Having trailed the Koreans 2-0 at half-time, they scored three unanswered goals - including a stoppage-time winner - to triumph 3-2. The Chinese team's nine Asian Cup titles is by far the most of any team, and includes seven consecutive victories between 1986 and 1999.

The team have one Olympic medal, a silver, which they won at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Having failed to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the Chinese team returned to the Olympic stage four years later in Rio de Janeiro, but were eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual champions Germany. At the 2020 Games in Tokyo they were knocked out after the group stage following defeats to Brazil and the Netherlands and a draw with Zambia.

The People's Republic of China hosted the inaugural World Cup in 1991. Their performance at the 2022 Asian Cup secured qualification for the 2023 World Cup, with the team having competed at seven of the previous eight tournaments [only missing 2011]. They achieved their best World Cup result in 1999, finishing as runners-up after losing 5-4 on penalties to hosts the United States of America.
