Team Overview

General
Qatar claimed their only Asian Games medal when they won gold as hosts of the tournament in 2006. In Doha, they finished second in their group and progressed to the quarterfinals as one of the best second-placed teams. The Qataris overcame Thailand 3-0 in the last eight, before beating the Islamic Republic of Iran 2-0 to set up a gold medal match against Iraq. They secured the title with a 1-0 victory in the final.

The Qatari team have only progressed from the group stage on two other occasions, reaching the quarterfinals in 1998 and the round of 16 in 2010. At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, they posted a 1-1 draw with Thailand but defeats to Uzbekistan and Bangladesh saw them finish bottom of their group.

As hosts of the 2016 AFC U23 Championship, Qatar initially made home advantage count as they made it all the way to the semifinals. However, defeat to the Republic of Korea in the last four was followed by a 2-1 third place play-off loss to Iraq after extra-time. The team went one better at the 2018 edition of the tournament, recovering from a semifinal defeat to Vietnam on penalties to secure third place with a 1-0 victory over the Republic of Korea. They were eliminated in the group stage of the AFC U23 Asian Cup in both 2020 and 2022.

Qatar made their first Olympic Games appearance in 1984 in Los Angeles, where they finished bottom of their group. Their only other Olympic participation was in 1992, when they advanced from their group in second place before being eliminated by eventual silver medallists Poland in the quarterfinals.
