Team Overview

General
Myanmar are two-time gold medallists at the Asian Games, but the 2018 Games was the first time they had competed at the tournament for 24 years. On their return in Indonesia they found themselves in a tight group where all four teams recorded one win, one draw, and one defeat. Despite beating group winners the Islamic Republic of Iran 2-0, they were the only team of the four not to progress to the knockout stage due to an inferior goal difference.

Myanmar claimed their first Asian Games title in 1966 in Bangkok when they overcame the Iranian team 1-0 in the final. The team then defended their title four years later in 1970, although on that occasion they shared gold with the Republic of Korea after the two sides played out a goalless draw. They also won bronze at the 1954 Asian Games.

The team have also been among the medals at the South East Asian Games since the turn of the century, including silver in 2007 and 2015 after they lost the gold medal match to Thailand on both occasions. They claimed bronze at the 2019 Games in the Philippines following a penalty shoot-out victory over Cambodia in the third place play-off.

The Myanmarese team competed at the 2013 AFC U22 Championship, but they have not featured at the tournament since it became an U23 competition in 2016. On their only appearance at the Olympic Games, in Munich in 1972, they did not advance beyond the initial group stage.
