Team Overview

General
The Republic of Korea are the reigning Asian Games champions, having won back-to-back gold medals in the men's team sabre competition in 2014 and 2018. They beat the Islamic Republic of Iran in the final in both Incheon and Indonesia. The Korean team were also gold medallists at the 1998 and 2002 Asian Games but they were beaten finalists in 2006 and 2010, losing to the People's Republic of China both times. They had also been runners-up in 1986, 1990, and 1994, and bronze medallists in 1978.

The Korean team have won gold at the Olympic Games the last two times the discipline was part of the programme. They beat Romania to secure their first gold medal at London 2012, winning the match 45-26, and defeated Italy by exactly the same scoreline at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. Their first two Olympic appearances had come at Seoul 1988 and Atlanta 1996 but they did not progress past the first round at either tournament.

A run of four consecutive gold medals at the world championships came to an end in 2023 in Milan when the Koreans were beaten in the final by Hungary. The roles had been reversed in 2017, 2019, and 2022, with the Republic of Korea coming out on top in the final over the Hungarians, while the Korean team also beat Italy in the 2018 final.

After ranking fifth at the 2003 Asian Championships in Chiang Mai, the Korean team are on a run of 17 consecutive podium finishes at the tournament. They have won 10 gold medals during that time, and have secured the title at the three most recent tournaments [2019, 2022, 2023].
