Team Overview

General
The Japanese men's epee team claimed their first Asian Games title at Indonesia 2018, defeating the People's Republic of China 30-22 in the final. They were runners-up in 1974, 1978, and 2014, and won bronze in 1986, 1990, and 2010.

Japan made their first Olympic appearance in men's team epee at Tokyo 2020 and won gold with a 45-36 victory over ROC in the final. It was the first time athletes representing Japan had won gold in any fencing discipline at the Olympic Games.

Japan's only medal at the world championships came at the 2022 edition of the tournament in Cairo, where they beat Hungary in the third place match. They were ranked 10th at the 2023 World Championships after losing to Germany in the round of 16. At the Asian championships, the Japanese team are the reigning champions having beaten Kazakhstan in the final in Wuxi in 2023. They also claimed the title in 2016.
