The People's Republic of China's sole Asian Games title in men's team epee came in 1978 in Bangkok. They have won the silver medal six times since then, including at Indonesia 2018 and three consecutive Games between 1986 and 1994, without securing another title. At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, they lost 30-22 to Japan in the final.

The Chinese team have competed at five Olympic Games. They are yet to win a medal but were beaten in the bronze medal match at both Beijing 2008 and Tokyo 2020, losing to Italy and the Republic of Korea, respectively.

They have also not finished on the podium at the world championships. Their best performance at the tournament came in 2019 in Budapest, where they were beaten by Ukraine in the semifinals and lost to Switzerland in the bronze medal match. They were ranked 13th in 2023 in Milan. The Chinese team have seen more success at the Asian championships, winning four gold medals since 2003. They have also been losing finallists on six occasions.
