His grandfather Hua Longyi was a fighter pilot during the 1950s, and was nicknamed Lone Hero by the authorities in the People's Republic of China. His brother Hua Ming has played cricket for Eton College and the Marylebone Cricket Club [MCC] in London, England. His partner Sarah Higgins has competed in dressage at international level.
