Team Overview

General
Afghanistan have claimed silver at both editions of the Asian Games to feature men's cricket. They lost the 2010 final to Bangladesh by five wickets, and were defeated by Sri Lanka by 68 runs four years later in Incheon.

The Afghan team have made six appearances at the T20 World Cup, advancing past the first round for the first time in 2016. In the Super 10 stage, they beat eventual champions the West Indies by six runs but lost their other three matches to England, South Africa, and Sri Lanka, and did not progress to the knockout stage. At the 2022 T20 World Cup, the Afghans qualified for the Super 12 thanks to their performance at the 2021 tournament, but lost three of their matches [the other two were abandoned due to rain] to finish bottom of Group 1.

Afghanistan won four editions of the ACC Twenty20 Cup between 2007 and 2013, although they shared the 2007 title with Oman following a bizarre finish to the final. Oman needed two runs to win from the final ball but the on-strike batsman could only swing and miss. The Afghanistan players began celebrating as they incorrectly believed the wicketkeeper had stumped the batsman, and this allowed the batsmen to scramble through for a single to tie the match and take it to a bowl-out. However, in the premature Afghanistan celebrations the crowd had invaded the pitch and rendered it unplayable for a bowl-out, so the title was shared.

The team advanced to the Super Four stage of the 2022 Asia Cup, but did not reach the final after suffering defeats to Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India. However, they were the only team to beat eventual champions Sri Lanka at the tournament, winning by eight wickets in the group stage.
