Team Overview

General
The Republic of Korea won four gold medals at the Asian Games in 11 appearances between 1974 and 2014. The team claimed their first title at the 1978 Games in Bangkok, where they won all four of their matches in a five-team round-robin tournament. They claimed their second and third gold medals in 1990 and 1994, securing victory in the final over the People's Republic of China and Japan, respectively, and won their fourth title with a 70-64 triumph over the Chinese team in the gold medal match at Incheon 2014.

In 2018 in Indonesia, players from the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea competed together as Korea Unified. The team finished second in their group to set up a quarterfinal match against Thailand, which they won 106-63, and then beat Chinese Taipei 89-66 in the last four. Korea Unified eventually had to settle for silver after losing the gold medal match 71-65 to the People's Republic of China.

The Republic of Korea are tied with the People's Republic of China for the most titles [12] at the Asia Cup. However, the Koreans have not won the tournament since 2007, and have finished outside the top three at each of the last four editions. They lost the third place play-off to the Chinese team in 2017 and to Australia in both 2019 and 2021. At the 2023 Asia Cup they lost to Australia in the first knockout round, and their final ranking of fifth was their lowest ever at the competition.

The Korean team have struggled at the World Cup in recent years, and ranked 10th at the 2023 edition after winning only once [against Bosnia and Herzegovina] in five group games. They did not win a match at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and finished bottom of their group. Their only Olympic medal came at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, where they lost to the United States of America in the final.
