Malaysia beat Vietnam and Qatar in Pool A to qualify for the quarterfinals at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. They faced Thailand in the last eight and lost 15-13 to the eventual bronze medallists.

The Malaysians made their U23 World Cup debut in 2018 in Xi'an, where they failed to reach the knockout rounds and ranked 14th overall. They have not appeared at the tournament since.

At senior level, the Malaysian team were runners-up on their Asia Cup debut in 2017, losing 21-15 to Australia in the final. They have made a further four appearances at the tournament since then but have not come close to another podium finish. At the 2023 Asia Cup in Singapore, the Malaysian team lost their two group matches to New Zealand and Mongolia, and finished ranked 12th overall.

Their sole appearance at the senior World Cup came in 2018. They won two of their four group stage matches but that was not enough to progress to the knockout rounds. They were bronze medallists at the 2019 South East Asian Games, securing their place on the podium with a 21-7 victory over Vietnam in the third place match.
