Team Overview

General
Japan claimed silver at the first Asian Games to feature 3x3 basketball in 2018, when the competition was restricted to U23 players. After winning their three pool games against Chinese Taipei, Mongolia, and Nepal, they defeated hosts Indonesia in the quarterfinals and overcame Thailand at the semifinal stage. They had to settle for silver after a 21-10 loss to the People's Republic of China in the gold medal game.

The Japanese team triumphed at the 2019 U23 World Cup in Lanzhou, overcoming defending champions the Russian Federation 19-14 in the final to claim their first title at the tournament. It saw Japan gain a measure of revenge after they lost out to the Russian team in the 2018 final. At the 2022 U23 World Cup they were beaten in the quarterfinals by eventual champions France.

Japan's continental-level results in senior competitions include a third-place finish at the 2019 Asia Cup in Changsha. They finished fourth at the 2022 Asia Cup after losing the third place match to Indonesia, and were knocked out at the quarterfinal stage by Thailand at the 2023 edition of the tournament.

As hosts at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, the senior Japanese team won five of seven games in the pool phase to progress to the quarterfinals, where they lost 16-14 to France. Japan were ranked 13th at the senior World Cup in 2017, 2019, and 2022.
