Team Overview
General
Qatar were quarterfinalists at the first Asian Games 3x3 basketball tournament in 2018, which was comprised of U23 sides. They opened with comfortable wins over Nepal, the Syrian Arab Republic, and Jordan, with only a 21-15 loss to Japan keeping them from topping Pool C. Eventual gold medallists the People's Republic of China ended the Qatari team's tournament in the last eight with a 21-18 defeat.
The Qatari team competed at the U23 World Cup in 2019 and 2022. They failed to progress to the knockout stage on both occasions, winning just one of their four pool-phase matches at each tournament.
At senior level, Qatar became the first Asian side to win the World Cup title when they triumphed at the 2014 edition. They finished fourth in their group but produced a stunning run in the knockout rounds to eliminate Estonia, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania, before snatching the title from defending champions Serbia with an 18-13 victory in the final. At the following two World Cups in 2016 and 2017, the team would only reach the quarterfinals, and they did not advance past the pool phase at the 2019 edition.
A senior Qatari side won the inaugural Asia Championship [now the Asia Cup] in 2013. The Qatar Maroon team, one of two men's Qatari squads to play at the event, triumphed over Saudi Arabia in the final. Since then, the furthest Qatar have progressed at the tournament is the quarterfinal stage [2018, 2019, 2023]. They lost 16-13 to Australia in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Asia Cup.
